MIKE POTTER

Mike Potter played scrumhalf for UNL 1974-‘76 but, according to Mike, “Slowly worked my way into the scrum as my whiskers grayed.  I’m pretty sure over my five decades of playing, I played all positions at one time or another.”

He has had an array of club involvement outside of the UNL side including: Playing with the Omaha Rugby Club where he earned the nickname “Gunback,” the Currie Rugby Rats where he played in the New Orleans Invite, “Wy-aska” team comprised of Wyoming and Nebraska players (fun Frontier Day’s tournament), the University of Wyoming Rugby Club while working for UP in Laramie, the Omaha GOATS, and with the Bustard Eagles (Brisbane Australia) Tournament in Christchurch NZ, Cape Town South Africa, and Hawaii.  He founded and coached the original UNL women’s team as well as founded the UNO rugby program while he was waiting to start his job with UP in 1977.

His favorite tournament was played in Cape Town, South Africa.  One of his worst memories was breaking two ribs and tearing up his knee while playing in an Austin tournament with the Goats.

Mike earned his BS in Civil Engineering, a MS in Structural Engineering, is a professional engineer emeritus and retired from Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) in 2012.  He and his wife of 41 years live on Table Rock Lake.  The couple has a son, two daughters and two grandsons
