MIKE MEYSENBURG

After befriending an Englishman and fellow high school classmate from Omaha, Mike “Meys” Meysenburg transitioned from what he gained from other sports into a newfound activity where playing rugby was sheer joy and happiness.

Few players throughout the 50-year history of UNL Rugby could match the strength, speed, versatility and intensity of Meysenburg during the mid-90’s.  While at Nebraska, his versatility shone brightest as he was used as an ultra-mobile prop, but truly excelled playing 8-man.  Accolades included Western Collegiate all-star in 1999, All Big 12, and Big 12 tournament MVP in 2000. Mike continued his career after college for a season with OMBAC rugby and then off and on through the years with the Omaha GOATS 15’s and 7’s teams. When asked about Mike’s style of play, former teammate and coach Niko Waqalaivi would more times than not, have to remind Mike, “Not to get in a fight;” which was advice that he seldom heeded.

Mike, Rachel and his two daughters reside in Omaha where he works as an arborist and owns Great Plains Tree Care.
